Help
Choosing

There are many factors involved with choosing the right puppy for you. You need to educate yourself on what to look for in a puppy before your adopt your dog. Remember your dog will be with you for the next 10 to 20 years. It is important to choose a dog that fits your lifestyle and needs.

Crate
Training
The benefits of crate training done properly are numerous. Dogs have a very strong "den" instinct. Most will not eliminate in their den, and being in there gives them a more secure feeling. Your dog will grow up a little more confident if he/she knows that there is a safe place to go to when the world becomes too much to handle.
Socialization

What one thing will ensure the development of a calm, confident dog unlikely to jump, bark, bite, spook or become aggressive around other dogs or people? Daily socialization to a wide variety of human infants, toddlers, pre-teens, adolescents, adults, as well as many other pups and friendly adult dogs. Pups exposed at a young age, on a daily basis, to a wide variety of new situations, children, adults, friendly dogs and other pups are much less likely to react fearfully, bark, aggress or bite later in life.

"Plain conditioning is easier than counterconditioning: an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Puppies are oportunities. List everything you'd like your puppy to enjoy as an adult and condition him while he's still a puppy and has been conditioned otherwise" - Dogs in Canada.

Build Drive Early!! It is our opinion that the single most important factor in training your dog is drive. Your dog needs drive in order for you to use it as motivation (not bribery) to get your dog to do what you want. The stimulus used can be food , ball or tug. Depending on the breed and breeding, ball's or tug's are usually the easiest to build in most dogs, get the dog more stimulated in the long run, and usually the most convenient to train. We usually use a combination of mostly ball or tug stimulus with food when necessary and in the early stages. Here are some exercises on building drive. We cannot stress enough the importance of building drive as a puppy for dogs that don't have a lot of drive.
Bite
Inhibition
Little puppies and big dogs love to chew. There is a very positive way of keeping both your dog and yourself happy. This is an excellent article by Joel Walton on this method called Bite Inhabit ion.
